There is no let up with the courgettes, beans or peas, though the ducks seem to be on short time - I'm not getting many eggs at all at the moment. I've finally started turning the blackcurrants into jam - I'll have to start picking the raspberries soon. I've recently bought two California Giant rabbits - both female about 5 months old. I've also bought some 5 week old chicks.

After a couple of weeks of rain (it was much needed, but thankfully will soon stop) everything is growing like mad and I'm now feet deep in courgettes, french beans and mangetout peas. The grass is growing well too, which is good news for the lambs, but means I have to get busy with the lawn mower again. Unfortunately Peterson, one of my rabbits, died this week, which came as a big surprise as he was the youngest and healthiest of them. He was fine at tea time one day, then found dead the next morning. At least it was quick, but I've no idea what he died of.

The weather has been absolutely gorgeous for weeks now. I am inundated with strawberries. I've made one batch of jam this evening and will make some more tomorrow. Holly the pig came back from visiting Boris yesterday, along with a couple of large black/saddleback cross piglets. They will be company for her until she has her own piglets. The roses are also doing well, which is a great relief as I am supplying them for a local lady's wedding at the end of next week.
I had to go up to Scotland last week on family business and the word must have got around the local wildlife because Mr. Fox came to visit whilst I was gone and bagged a couple of my ducks. Even worse he took two of the females so I now have far too many males for the number of females.

Picked our first strawberries of the year today, they were delicious. I can thoroughly recommend 'Marshmello'.

22nd May 2010
The lambs are back in the top field now the grass has had a chance to grow. It's certainly growing well in the garden! The weather has been extremely hot and sunny for the last few days and the lawn mower has had plenty of work to do.

The final tally is 12 ducklings.

30th April 2010
Holly the sow Holly the sow has gone to visit Boris the boar for a few weeks. The lambs are now in the bottom field, stuffing themselves on fresh grass. There is no sign of any ducklings hatching yet.

The story so far...
Holly the sow is in the bottom field and 4 lambs are in the top field. The 3 rabbits, Mrs. Bunny, Peterson and Smudge are still indoors at the moment. The 11 ducks (3 boys and 8 girls) are averaging 6 eggs a day. I put 31 duck eggs in the incubator where they've been for 12 days. My wwoofer Shelley and I candled them 2 days ago and only 2 were infertile. Shelley left today after sowing lots of seeds for me. As an experiment we planted garlic bulbs amongst a quarter of the rose bushes. They are supposed to deter insects (they certainly deter me!) so I will be able to compare the results later in the year.
