WWOOFing at Higher Hollamoor Farm

WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms, and is an organisation that brings together volunteers and hosts. The host gets help on the farm and in exchange the volunteer gets the experience of working on a farm and the opportunity to learn new skills.
At Higher Hollamoor, the work can be anything from feeding the animals, to clearing ditches, or tending the vegetable patch. As an example, at the time of writing this, my next task is to move some piglets from the pig-sty down to the field, then to clean out the sty ready for my sow who is due to farrow shortly.

Volunteers are welcome at any time of year, especially in the spring when mother nature starts to go potty and I have great difficulty in trying to keep up!

Accommodation is provided in the farmhouse, in either a single bedroom or a small double. WWOOFERs must have a current membership number. I have had visitors from all over the world, from Korea and Hong Kong to France and Germany, plus the occasional Brit! I take wwoofers for any length of time up to a maximum of two weeks.
My aim is to be as self-sufficient as possible, given the small size of our holding. Our WWOOF host number is SW36. If you are interested in wwoofing here, please get in touch via the wwoof website.

Another very useful organisation is DASH - Devon Association of Smallholders. This is a self-help organisation who provide anything from social get-togethers to courses on lambing. Further information can be found at www.devonsmallholders.co.uk
